I am roughing Al 7000-series material at around 30,000 rpm using a 1-inch solid carbide uncoated end mill with 2 flutes at an axial DOC of 0.200 inch and a radial DOC of 50%. I am using an HSK80 toolholder, coolant through, with a good machine and stable setup.

At this speed, there is no surface finish difference if I climb or conventional mill. But is there a difference between the two methods in terms of tool life?

Response from Boeing’s Research & Technology group

With 7000-series aluminum on our own 24,000-rpm Indexable Carbide Inserts spindle, we achieve 200+ hours of tool life using carbide cutters. We do both climb and conventional milling and we do not see tool life being affected. For us, the key to long tool life and good part finishes is dynamically testing all of our cutting tools first before high speed machining aluminum. By doing so, we find what is called the "sweet spot," which is the optimal rpm and depth of cut the cutting tool will run with no chatter regardless of step-over, full slot cutting or corners. Once we have these parameters, we program to them—confident that we will not have any cutting tool chatter issues. The system we use for this dynamic testing is called "Metal Max” from Manufacturing Laboratories, Inc.

I was perusing Twitter the other day when this Coated Inserts YouTube video caught my eye. Although I have often appreciated the fascinating Discovery Channel show "How it’s Made” for bringing metalcutting into the living rooms of the general public every once in a while, I wasn’t aware that an episode had been dedicated to the manufacture of industrial cutting tools. I Carbide Milling Insert think it’s well worth a look. For one, it’s pretty neat. Beyond that, it serves as a reminder of how many layers there are to manufacturing. That is, tools are made by tools, and the time and effort involved in using any variety of production equipment effectively may well be equivalent to what was required to manufacture it in the first place.

Although the video focuses on solid tools, I find the various processes employed to manufacture carbide inserts just as interesting. In fact, watching this reminded me of a visit to Germany three years ago, where I got a first-hand look at P.H. Horn’s insert manufacturing process. WorkNC G3 automatically generates optimized roughing and finishing tool paths for two- through five-axis machining applications. The new NCSpeed module, developed by Formtec and fully integrated into WorkNC, can produce additional cycle time reductions.

NCSpeed uses a computer-generated stock model that is updated dynamically and continuously. This more advanced method allows the module to calculate the load and thus forces generated on the cutting tool. It?s purpose is to transfer energy from the fly line down to the fly, allow for natural presentation of the fly, and then be strong enough for the fly fisher to retrieve any fish that might strike at the naturally presented fly. Sounds simple enough, but this is fly fishing, and fly fishers have been around a long time. And as a group we seem to think about everything related to our sport a lot, and therefore probably have over complicated things a tad.

The leader in fly fishing is tapered. It is thicker at the butt section, then at the tippet section. It is usually divided into three sections, the butt is tied directly to the fly line, and is the longest portion of the leader, about 60%. The mid-section is next and its purpose is to taper down to the tippet without losing a lot of strength. The final section is the tippet, it is the actual section that is tied to the fly. It is the thinnest section, it needs to be strong, yet allow for a natural drift, without alarming the fish that your offering is connected to a person that will pull back.

Commercial leaders by and large achieve all this in one smooth product. Although there are still knotted leaders out there, by and large knotless leaders are the choice. It is possible to construct you own leaders and many people do. But that is the topic of another article. Now comes the fun part. A new set of numbers to learn. Different numbers then choosing flies or fly rods. Fly fishing is overwrought with numbering systems, and unfortunately leaders and tippets you are just going to need to learn. They are sized on the X numbering system. So when you hear someone say they are switching to a 6X, you now know they are talking about their tippet. X measures the diameter of the leader minus .011. So a 6X would measure .005. A 0X would actually measure drop shot weights .011. One really only needs to remember the HIGER the X, the smaller the diameter. The other number worth noting the test, or breaking factor, a 4lb test leader will break when more than 4lbs pressure are applied. This is worth noting, and many a trophy are lost when violating that #.

There are many variable to consider when selecting the right X, but the two most common are the size of fish you are going after, and the size of fly you are using when going after them. A quick guide is as follows:

One must also think about the length of the leader itself. Leaders are sold these days anywhere from 4 feet to 15 feet. There are many things to consider when deciding on length, some are variable like wind and water clarity. Other variable are static like size of fish, current, etc.

Such instability over the years, and the downward trend in world prices, has a direct impact on Armenia’s economy.The three largest producers of molybdenum – China, the US and Chile – affect world market tungsten carbide sheet prices in a variety of ways.China also consumes 30% of the molybdenum produced annually, mostly for steel production.Many analysts say that due to the opening of new mines in recent years in China, the US, and Chile, supply has outstripped demand and molybdenum prices have dropped as a result.According to the latest stats issued by the International Molybdenum Association (IMOA), 539.2 million pounds (244,577 tons) of molybdenum were produced in 2013 and 522.5 million pounds (237,000 tons) consumed.Some related institutions posits that the fall in molybdenum prices this year from a first quarter average of $18,900 per ton is due to a fall in demand and sluggish growth rates internationally. There’s also a theory that China is intentionally pulling back on its economic growth reins.Due to a slight rise in molybdenum prices from May-June of 2014, Armenian exports of ferro-molybdenum (an important iron-molybdenum alloy containing 60-70% molybedum) appreciated in value compared to 2013. In 2014, Armenia exported 6,500 tons at a value of 45,614 billion AMD (US$94.7 million). In 2013 it exported 6,650 tons at a slightly less value of 41.936 billion AMD ($87.1 million).All of the ferro-molybdenum produced in Armenia in 2014 (6,500 tons) was exported. Exports reached a high in 2013 (6,650 tons) and a low in 2010 (5,250 tons).The biggest importers of Armenia’s ferro-molybdenum are Holland and Germany. Last year Holland imported 3,660 tons and Germany, 2,840 tons.Armenia has not exported raw molybdenum since 2005. The ore is totally reprocessed into ferro-molybdenum at the Makour Yerkat and Armenian Molybdenum Production plants in Armenia.Despite the fall in prices, molybdenum remains an important component of Armenia’s economy. Molybdenum market quotation in China: molybdenum concentrate price is about 1,740.00 yuan/ton, ferro molybdenum price is 118,000 yuan/ton and moly oxide price is 1,840.00 yuan/ton.

Under the situation that the international molybdenum price is adjusted sideways and the new round of tendering activities for steel mills has not yet begun, molybdenum chemical companies are relatively weak in raising prices, and supported by production costs, the willingness to sell at lower prices is also low.
